The Philadelphia Mummers parade, often known locally as just the Philly Mummers, is an iconic folk festival and parade held each new years day in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that has been taking place for well over 100 years.
The Mummers parade has continued to grow in size and popularity throughout that time and is now the most well known and popular of all the new year parades in the United States, among competition from the likes of the Rose Parade in Pasadena and the Cotton Bowl parade in Texas.
The Mummers parade is based on a tradition of the mummers play from back in the 17th century and is renowned for the variety of colour and the costumes of the different parade divisions that are broken down into the Comic Division, String Bands, Wench Brigades, Fancy Division and Fancy Brigades. The parade is a free event (with the exception of a couple of small paid grandstand sections located at City Hall) and draws crowds of many thousands to the Philly streets, with many more watching on television and via the free live online stream that has been available for several years.

Some Mummers expressed disappointment at the postponement, but they understand the reasoning especially when it comes to the expensive costumes they wear.
“Disappointing as usual,” said Bob Thiel as he worked on costumes for the Fralinger String Band. “But you put in all this work, you have expensive instruments. You don’t want to get anything ruined either.”
